Writers’ Collective/Winnipeg Free Press Nonfiction & Poetry Contests Are Open!

Entry deadline: November 18, 2013

The Winnipeg Free Press and The Writers’ Collective of Manitoba are proud to announce our Nonfiction and Poetry contests for 2013!

This year’s theme is: an unfamiliar place. An “unfamiliar place” might be a physical landscape, but it could also be a situation or emotional space. We look forward to however you choose to interpret it!

Prizes

Nonfiction: 1st place $500; 2nd place $300; 3rd place $100

All nonfiction winners will be published in the Winnipeg Free Press. The first place winner will also be published in the new Collective Consciousness.

Poetry: 1st place $150, publication in the new Collective Consciousness; 2nd place $100; 3rd place $50

Up to two honourable mentions may be awarded in each category. All winning entries and honourable mentions receive a one-year Writers’ Collective membership.

I can’t find any link on this page to the “written rules” or the “entry form”. Where are these located and how can I access them?

  2. Cathy Montgomery says:

    Hello!

I am interested in entering the non-fiction “an unfamiliar place” contest.

I am also interested in becoming a member and in volunteering with the Writers’ Collective.

Can you please e-mail me about how to accomplish all of this?

    Thank You!

  4. Maya says:

    Where should I send submissions?

  5. Hilary Friesen says:

    Hi all,
Thank you for your interest in our contests, and apologies for the delay in posting the entry form. There is now a link to the form in the post above. The form includes the contest rules and directions for submitting your entry.
    Happy writing!

I would like to pay my non member fee via paypal but when I click on add to cart nothing happens

  7. Hilary Friesen says:

    Hi Tilda,
Our apologies! Thanks for letting us know about the issue. I believe it has been corrected now.

  8. Shayne says:

Is there a maximum or minimum word count for either category?

  9. Hilary Friesen says:

    Hi Shayne,
Word counts for categories are included in the contest rules – 1,000 to 1,500 for nonfiction, and up to three pages for poetry.

  10. Maria Guadalupe Serrano-Diez says:

    Hello,

    I have two questions:

    1) Could I submit to entries? One for non-fiction and the other for poetry?

    2) If I do not write my name in the manuscript, do I use a pseudonym or how could you identify that the manuscript is mine?

    Thank you for your help

  11. Hilary Friesen says:

    Hi Maria,
Yes, you may submit as many entries as you like. However, you have to pay an entry fee for each entry. Please include an entry form with each entry. The form will include your name and the title of your work. Make sure the title of your entry is on the entry, and that’s how we’ll identify it!
Thanks for your interest in our contests.

  12. Fred Kandera says:

I would like to participate in the contest for non fiction writing and need an entry form and conditions

  13. Hilary Friesen says:

    Hi Fred,
The entry form (which includes the contest rules) is provided at the link above, under “To Enter.”
Thanks for your interest in our contest!

  14. Libby Simon says:

    Hello,
Please note at the very top of the Entry Form the deadline reads November 15, 2013. Elsewhere, it is November 18, 2013. FYI.

Also, if I email the ms. as an attachment, I assume I would only be sending one and copies to judges would only be made at your end, if necessary? Please advise. Thanks.

  15. Hilary Friesen says:

    Hi Libby,
Thanks for letting us know. The deadline is in fact November 18.
Yes, if you email your entry as an attachment, we will make any copies needed.

  16. Terriann says:

I am trying to print or view the Contest Rules for the Writing Contest “Unfamiliar Place” Deadline in the Wpg Free Press said November 17th; I see online Writers Collective says November 18th. I have my story but cannot access the Contest Rules-Entry form?

    I appreciate someone’s assistance!

    Thank you!

  17. Hilary Friesen says:

    Hi Terriann,
The link for the contest rules in the post above opens up a PDF, so perhaps you don’t have Adobe Reader installed? If you phone or email the office, we can email a form to you.
