Enter in one – or all – of three categories:

  1. Marie Barton Postcard Fiction Contest
    In honour of the late Marie Barton, a dedicated local writer, teacher and former member of the Canadian Authors’ Association.
    We challenge writers to tell a story based on a postcard in 100 words or less. Send us your postcard or quality photocopy of a postcard image along with your tale.
    Prizes: First, $100; second, $50; third, $25
  2. Eileen D. Pruden Award for Historical Fiction
    A new contest, thanks to a generous donation from the Pruden family.
    Open to adults age 40 and over. Your original story must feature a fictional character set sometime in Manitoba’s past. It must be unpublished and between 1,000 and 1,500 words.
    Prizes: First, $150; second, $75; third, $50
  3. Winnipeg Free Press/Writers’ Collective Fiction Contest
    Three categories: Junior student (Grades 7-8); Senior student (Grades 9-12); and Adult (age 18 and over). Stories must be original, unpublished works of fiction between 800 and 1,000 words for the junior student category and between 1,000 and 1,500 words for the senior student and adult categories.
    Prizes: Junior student & Senior student – $150, $75, $50 in each category, plus one Human Spirit award of $100; Adult – First, $200; second, $150; third $100

Summary of Rules

  • All entries must be original, unpublished works.
  • Author’s name must not appear on the manuscript.
  • Each entry must include an entry form (one form per entry).
  • Each entry must include the $5 fee (for members) or $15 fee (for non-members). Make cheques payable to: The Writers’ Collective.
  • Submit four (4) copies of your story, typed, double-spaced, printed one-sided on 8.5 x 11 paper, and stapled individually.
  • Entries must be submitted to: The Writers’ Collective, 565 – 167 Lombard Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3B 0V3 and must be postmarked by Monday, April 15, 2013.
  • One prize per writer. Prizes will be presented at an Awards Gala in May.
  • Canadian residents only.
  • Entrants not complying with these rules will be disqualified.

Indeed we didn’t get our Spring Warm Weather by the official Spring Day ( 21st of March of 2013 ). So imagine you been touring within the indoor garden where Fresh Flower with clusters of bright blooms . Which provide a vivid splash of color and intensified with their soft seductive scent that filled the air with fragrance adds to create wonderful atmosphere ! Not to mention variety and original arrangement could enhance table centerpieces with the scents and striking color of brilliant blooms .     All the spring contests sound exciting.

    I’m interested to see the word “NEW!” before the Marie Barton PC contest, is this to reflect the word count change? The year I won the Marie Barton (2008) the challenge was to write a PC story in under 500 words. Ha. Now with only 100 words the challenge of producing a story with beginning/middle/end is certainly more daunting. I may try giving it a go. :-)

As you say – the Marie Barton contest is not new to us, and even the shorter word limit has been in place for a few years. It is a challenge, but it has yielded some surprisingly good results! I hope you will give it a go.

    Winners will be notified the week of May 6, and a news release will be sent out the week of May 15. Our Awards Night is also May 15, when prizes will be presented to the winners and we’ll get to hear excerpts from their stories. Winners will also be announced in our e-newsletter.
