The Malahat Review’s Oodles of Contests!

Have you been over to the Malahat Review’s website lately?

I was going to do a post about their Non-Fiction prize, but they have 4 contests going on right now!

Here’s the skinny:

Open Season Awards

Prize money: $3000
Entries due every November 1 (postmarked)

Writers are encouraged to enter The Malahat Review’s newest contest in three categories: poetry, fiction, and/or creative nonfiction. Winners are published in the Spring issue and split the prize money three ways.

Novella Prize / Long Poem Prize

Prize money: Up to $2000
Entries due every February 1 (postmarked)

The two oldest and most prestigious contests that The Malahat Review offers, the Novella Prize and Long Poem Prize alternate in even and odd years respectively, with two prizes of $1000 each awarded in the former and a single prize of $1500 in the latter. No matter the genre, the winning entry appears in the Summer issue.

Far Horizon Awards

Prize money: $1000
Entries due every May 1 (postmarked)

As a compliment to the Novella and Long Poem prizes, the Far Horizons Awards are short-form contests, with the Far Horizons Award for Short Fiction given during odd years and the Far Horizons Award for Poetry in even. Only open to writers who have yet to publish in book form for the genre in question. Winners are published in the Fall issue.

Creative Nonfiction Prize

Prize money: $1000
Entries due every August 1 (postmarked)

To nurture The Malahat Review’s newest genre, the Creative Nonfiction Prize was established in 2007. The winning entry appears in the Winter issue.

Many Malahat contest winners have gone on to be recognized by the National Magazine Awards, the Western Magazine Awards, the Journey Prize, and the Best of Canadian Poetry in English.
