Robert Kroetsch: 1927-2011

I’ve been trying to think of something poignant, something to encapsulate the wounding blow the writers community here in Canada suffered yesterday with the passing of Robert Kroetsch yesterday at the age of 84.

He was a friend to many and a mentor to many more.

As I write this, I find that I keep referring back to Ariel Gordon’s post about his passing, and I’ve decided that for words on the life of Robert Kroetsch, it should be Ariel’s post that you should read and not mine. She knew Robert and her send off to him is both touching and inspiring. Please have a read and take a moment to acknowledge the passing of a truly inspirational man.

I didn’t know Robert Kroetsch. Friends did. After reading Ariel Gordon’s Blog posting I thought well of him in that he had managed to find the time to greet other writers at the beginning of their – possibly great – careers. Such kindly greetings have a way of enduring for a very long time. And that’s a sober certainty.
