Calls for Submissions

Cabinet Magazine “Like the 17th-century cabinet of curiosities to which its name alludes, Cabinet is as interested in the margins of culture as its center. Presenting wide-ranging, multi-disciplinary content in each issue through the varied formats of regular columns, essays, interviews, and special artist projects, Cabinet’s hybrid sensibility merges the popular appeal of an arts periodical, the visually engaging style of a design magazine, and the in-depth exploration of a scholarly journal” See their full submiss. guidelines here. Issue 39, Fall 2010 issue, with a themed section on “Learning”; July 15, 2010

The Antigonish Review is a quarterly literary journal published by St. Francis Xavier University. The Review features poetry, fiction, reviews and critical articles from all parts of Canada, the US and overseas, using original graphics to enliven the format. “For forty years, The Antigonish Review has consistently published fine poetry and prose by emerging — and established — writers. Their writing would not have been as readily available had it not been for the efforts of this review.” See their website for a full overview. They don’t accept fiction submissions between June and October but other than that seem quite open, click here for full submission info (I particularly enjoyed their Style Consistency section)

Journals

Below is an incomplete list of Canadian literary journals that accept submissions. Each entry includes a link to the journal’s website (click on the title), a list of what it accepts, and a note on where in Winnipeg you can borrow or buy the journal. At the end of the list, you will also find a few genre publications (Fantasy/SciFi and Western).

You’ll save yourself a certain amount of time and effort – and rejection slips – by doing your research beforehand to find out what kind of work each journal publishes, and focusing on those that seem to include writers like you. It doesn’t have to be complicated – just read a couple issues and follow each publication’s submission guidelines closely. Good luck!
